Camping out underneath the Milky Way amongst the white gypsum sand dunes. Did you know gypsum stays cool to the touch even in the scorching sun? Every time I go here, it’s magical. This land of enchantment may be the southwest’s greatest secret. See more of his stunning pics here.

Mescalero, NM. This was taken a few years ago by Corey Walker just a couple days before a young Mescalero Apache girl’s coming of age ceremony in Mescalero, NM.

Deciding to debut a daughter through a ceremony is a major commitment for a family. Preparation often begins as much as 3-5 years in advance with the gathering of sacred items such as roasted mescal heart and pollen from water plants.

Dancers must be arranged and a medicine man or medicine woman selected to participate. Finding a ceremonial dress, either from a relative who previously went through the ceremony, or made for the occasion, is important, as it is as symbolic part of the rite.
